Dedication

I will call this book my little big book. It is filled with tons of information to help any average aspiring Mother, Father or youth take a hold of their own lives.

It is dedicated to my two lovely daughters who were the true teachers in my own life. Both of you have made me very, very proud. Keep up the good work - ladies.

Preface - A Note to the Reader

Even though my childhood could be described as underprivileged, I always felt rich because of the upbringing and values instilled in me as a child.

I have had many obstacles in my life but being a mother has never been one of them. I knew from a very early age that I did want to have kids one day so from a very early age, I mentally prepared myself to be in a position to raise smart, talented and responsible children.

I did this simply by just paying attention to what was happening around me. After high school and after joining the U.S. Military, I meet and fell in love with another soldier and we were married.

But our union only lasted 7 years, however, out of our union, we had 2 lovely, adorable and incredible daughters. By the time I met my husband, I knew what I had to do.

First of all I had to put my health first because I realized early on, that a mother's health, whether it's good or bad, can be passed on to her newborn so I have always engaged in a good regular health routine -- in order to give my children the best chance they had of being born healthy.

You should always put your kids first because they are the movie stars in your lives and it's your job to nurture them so that they can grow up into responsible human beings.

As heads of the household and primary caregivers, it's up to many parents today, especially single mothers, to guide and mold their children into successful members of society.

I think I did a brilliant job of that. Both my daughters received Master's Degrees and they also became business owners in their early 20s.

I had to work through many difficulties and issues in my life but I count my blessings every day to see my family, my two daughters, bloom into the type of ethical and strong women that I could be proud of.

I taught my daughters to show gratitude and count their blessings - while they celebrate even the small victories in their lives.

EXCERPT:
Chapter 5: By Age 10 Your Children's Talents Will Come Shining Through
By the time a child reaches 10 years of age, their talents will be shining through. I saw at least 8 different skills and talents in my daughters as they grew up.

However, the things that they were most interested in, is the direction I pushed them into. So from a very early age, I helped my daughters design a life that they could truly love.

My oldest never made below a 95 in science so I knew from the very beginning, that she would end up in the medical field so today she is an occupational therapist.

She was an extrovert and very outgoing, which meant she needed friends around her so she became a cheerleader for 10 years.

My youngest was an introvert and did better by herself. Like me, she had a handful of friends and became a bookworm, which meant studies were very important to her.

Once I bought her a computer at 10 years of age, she would disappear in her room writing for hours and eventually won several writing awards for her poems and short stories. So today she is a Creative Writer and English Instructor/Professor.

Whatever area your children are excelling in, you need to push them into that direction so they can grow up in those careers and be happy.

Both of my daughters, unlike the 80% of undergraduates and graduates today, are still working in their fields.

Because I worked with my daughters early on to really figure out which direction they needed to go in, they both ended up picking the right careers.

Today half of all college students are still relying on their parents for support 2 years after graduating college.

By the time children turn 17 or 18 years old, and is preparing to leave home, if you have not instilled a certain value system and principle in them, then it's already too late.

By the time my daughters turned 18, they were handling many situations on their own. Over the years, when my daughters needed to figure things out, I would tell them to do a PROS and CONS list -- and if they had more pros than cons, then maybe they should do what they were thinking about doing.

So I taught my daughters from very early on how to think logically and figure things out on their own.

Cathy Harris, A Voice for the People, Suspended from Facebook.com on Nov. 4, 2015

Nov. 10, 2015

Cathy Harris and Her Selfie Stick
As a business owner you have to separate the activism from your 'business campaigns' because most activists and advocates do things for FREE, while business ownership is about setting up venues to become 'self-sufficient' or to be paid.

As much as I try to remain a business woman, a lot of my activism days keep coming out of me, especially when I visit some of the social media sites like facebook.com, and view some of the horrific stories in this country, where justice need to be served.

After all I ran my own newswire service for 15 years, NationalBlackAgendaOnline.com, before I started my empowerment company, AngelsPress.com, where I forwarded messages around the globe that affected my fellow man.

My ultimate goal as both an activist/advocate and business owner, is to spread powerful and positive messages to those that really need it and I think I do a pretty good job of that with my empowerment company.

We've all heard the stories about how facebook.com is suspending accounts, especially for voices of consciousness.

On Nov. 4, 2015, I was contacted by facebook.com and told that I was suspended.  One day earlier I had formed another group on facebook.com, "Natural Hair and Health," to spread business news and highlight causes in this country -- along with my other facebook.com groups "EEOC SecretsNational Non-GMO Health MovementOprah Life Class Empowerment Discussion and I Support Youth Entrepreneurs."

Facebook.com said the suspension was until Nov. 16, 2015, (13 days).  Last time I was kicked off facebook.com, about a year ago, was for almost 4 weeks but who is counting...right?

I am not going to sit around and beg facebook to let me get back on their site.  This has been a great opportunity for me to work on my other social media sites and projects so -- THANKS FACEBOOK.COM for kicking me off!!!

Why was I kicked off facebook.com on Nov. 4, 2015 in the first place?  I believe it was for one of the below reasons:
  • One month earlier I launched a "Campaign To Take Back America," along with "Virtual Training Centers for Women," which consisted of everyone taking back their own lives.  The goal for many leaders today is to keep "dumbing down" this country so eventually they will probably go after anyone that is speaking the truth - while educating, informing and empowering a whole nation of new leaders.
  • I am a major voice in the Non-GMO Health Movement and have been for 7 years, where I have been spreading the word on why everyone should contact their Senators before they vote to label foods as GMOs.
  • I was posting the latest news on police brutality/killings in this country and you know they are trying to silence anyone exposing the police.  Thirty-percent of my co-workers in Customs and Border Protection (the old U.S. Customs Service), where I worked for over 20 years before retiring 10 years ago, were former police officers, so I know FIRST-HAND what they do to people.
  • I was a major voice for the people and we know that many voices are being silenced all over the country -- today.  This is why it is important to have your own network.  Not just a mailing list but every business owner should have a list of ETHICAL business owners that they can refer to others.
Or maybe I was just posting too many messages. As a business owner you have to market yourself at least 75% of your time so if I was posting too many messages on facebook.com, maybe I just had a lot to say.  After all I am the author of 22 non-fiction books.

Many people have chosen not to be on facebook.com and I don't blame them.  Even though I had 3 facebook timelines and the 5 groups, I don't need facebook.  I have a large network and have been collecting emails for my mailing list since 1998.

These social media groups have the power to shut you down at a moment's notice so when you see someone on the same page as you, obtain their contact information because they might be -- here today and gone tomorrow.  So never ever depend on these social media groups to spread your messages.

And e ven though I blew the whistle 15 years ago,"The Cathy Harris Story ," I know I am still be monitored by the government and other law enforcement, especially on facebook.com, so this is why I continue to be visible in the media's eye.

Never forget for a whistleblower, "the media is the best outlet for a whistleblower."  I was represented back then by the Government Accountability Project (GAP), the same attorneys that are representing CIA Whistleblower Eric Snowden at this time.

And I am still a part of the American Whistleblower Tour, which makes me still one of the most loudest voices in America.  In 2014, I spoke at Princeton University along with a Department of Justice (DOJ) whistleblower, who was an attorney, who exposed NSA.gov warrantless wiretapping during the Bush administration.

Former Whistleblowers can never just sit in a corner and be quiet -- because that is definitely when they will come after you...so we have to stay visible.

All I ask is that you help me stay visible in the media's eye by joining my mailing list and forwarding my posts to all your family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

Refocus Your Energy On What Really Matters

Cathy Harris Halloween 2015 Costume
Fortune Teller/Gypsy

Your Future from Cathy Harris
"You will be extremely happy if you follow my "Campaign To Take Back America" and "Take Back Your Own Life"

Nov. 3, 2015

I am a gypsy at heart because in 2013, I left Atlanta after 20 years and spent one year on the road with a "National Humanitarian Tour" and visited 15 states, which was a lifelong dream of mine.

And because of my travels, I have been able to bring even more joy and happiness into my life. You can read more about my travels in an upcoming book "My Year On The Road: How I Found True Happiness by Living My Dreams - Eat, Pray, Drive.

Are you ready to refocus your energy and look at the things that truly matters in your life?  I have a lot to report on for the month of October 2015. Finally my community events slowed down so I can sit back and write this post.

October was an extremely busy month for me.  Not only was October 6, 2015, my 59th birthday, but around that same time, I launched a "Campaign to Take Back America" -- where I will be providing weekly lesson/action plans for my online audience and "Virtual Training Centers for Women" - through e-newsletters, The Cathy Harris ShowCathy Harris TV and webinars/teleseminars.

The Campaign To Take Back America" starts with you taking back your own life.  No it's not about taking back America from the Government, Corporations, Republicans, etc. or Stopping the War but it's about you becoming in control of your own life again.

Read the weekly lesson/action plans at www.CathyHarrisSpeaks.com and make these positive changes in your life.  It is not my goal to overwhelm you.  I am simply offering easy to set-up lesson/action plans for you and your entire family:
  • Action Plan 1: Form Positive Communities by Using Meetup.com in Your City.
  • Action Plan 2:  Join a Non-GMO Health Movement.  Pay attention...the Senate has not yet voted on whether to label foods as GMOs so you still have time to contact your Senators.
  • Action Plan 3: Walk Away from Network and Multi-Level Marketing Ventures.
I feel inspired around my birthday and usually sit back to see which direction my life is headed in.  I look back on all my accomplishments over the past year and set one year goals for the next year.

It's such a beautiful time of the year when the weather cools off and the leaves start turning red, brown and orange and falls to the ground.  I absolutely love this time of year and I probably love Halloween because it falls in the month of my birthday.

It's a time for new beginnings.  Anything is possible as we approach the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season -- then of course New Year.

So with 60 days/2 months before the New Year, now is the time for everyone to refocus their energy to start now working on their "To Do List" or "Goal Setting List" for next year -- 2016.

You missed a treat if you missed the Texas Metaphysical FairSunday, Oct. 18, 2015, in Killeen, TX, where Fort Hood, one of the largest military bases in the U.S. is located.  And as you know our military really need healing.

I have only been in Austin, TX for 16 months but I am really getting entrenched in Austin's Metaphysical World.  Not only was Oct. 18, 2015, my first Metaphysical Fair, but I was a participant as a Non-GMO Holistic and Natural Healer.

So when you think of metaphysical, it is about learning the truth about the universe but not just the universe but about your own life.

To me metaphysical goes hand in hand with spirituality and spirituality is about working on your own self - mind, body and soul.

In Austin, TX you can throw a stone and hit an "Energy Healer" so it's a large community of energy healers.  So even my work as a Non-GMO Holistic and Natural Healer, could be considered energy work.

Because of the fair my life has forever changed and now I am looking into entrenching myself even more into the teachings of the metaphysical community.

A while back I attended a Numerology class and the good thing is, the instructor provided opportunities for us to work with her one-on-one and she also provided a list of books for us to conduct our own research.

And in a couple of weeks, I will be attending a class to learn more about Angels.  There is a reason I named my Empowerment/Publishing Company, AngelsPress.com, over 10 years ago but until now, I did not have the clarity on why I did some things in my life back then.

I have always enjoyed the metaphysical world and not just because my daughter has taken classes to learn more about becoming a psychic but for years when growing up, I was fascinated with my horoscope and back then I knew something more was happening to me but I could never explain it until now.

The clarity that I have received by attending my first Metaphysical event, has really brought my life into alignment and I am so excited about all the possibilities that my life has to offer not just for my clients and customers in my business but my own personal life.

If you have never attended one of these events, then you should sign up for the next one in Jan. 2016 in Killeen, TX or other metaphysical events in your city or look for upcoming events in Austin, TX.

Many of these events are online, especially on the meetup.com groups and many Metaphysical experts are working with clients by skype and other ways.  So if you are intrigued like me, then check it out.  Is it something bigger than you in the universe?

If You Build It, They Will Come

By Advice Columnist, Cathy Harris, DearCathy.com

Sep. 7, 2015

Hello everyone:

I finally had a chance to watch the movie, "Field of Dreams" starring Kevin Costner, where the theme was "If You Build It, They Will Come." The movie illustrates one of the biggest business killing myths out there. Many business owners believe that once they open the doors of their business, then customers will simply pour in.

This typically doesn't happen. If you do not market and sell your services and products, not only will they not come, but they won't even notice. However, this e-newlsetter and blog post today is not about business but it's about how everyone can move forward and truly create the type of life that they deserve.

A couple of years ago, I was part of a panel discussion with several whistleblowers. One whistleblower on the panel made the statement that "We live in a world where we are at risk for a nuclear holocaust." The statement really got me thinking. Are we at risk of a nuclear holocaust?

Mainstream media today portrays the world as if we are in our last days. Their scare tactics and fear mongering have turned many people inwards causing them to live their lives in a state of denial and hopelessness instead of in peace, joy and happiness.

At one time over 30% of people moved around to other areas in this country but after the 2007/2008 financial crisis, that figure rose dramatically because many families were forced to leave their homes because of unethical realtors and others in the financial and banking industry.

Even the Census Bureau, another dysfunctional governmental agency, who according to whistleblowers, have always came up with their own figures, don't have a sense of who is where or how long they have been there.

Many people and families would like to leave their areas -- where they live -- and move some place else. What everyone should do is create their own villages - a group of 5, 10, 15, 20 or more friends - to associate with -- and use meetup.com and other social media websites to create neighborhoods and communities again. It's not impossible to use these groups to do this.

However, when building communities, you must remember that the person you are today depends on who you associate yourself with. If you wish to become self-sufficient and become a business owner, then you need to be associated with other business owners and form business alliances, strategic partnerships, co-ops, and joint ventures.

If you wish to help others learn how to grow their own foods again, then you need to be associated with business owners and others in organic communities. Associations are extremely important today especially when it comes to young people because peer pressure can be extremely hard.

Whomever you are associating yourself with, needs to bring timely and relevant information into your circle. The goal is to love and take care of one another. If you are a single mother living across country and you know you don't have a support system, then by all means move closer to family so they can help you out.

However, with all the technology today, especially skype, where you can visually see your loved ones on some type of computer, laptop, IPad or handheld gadget, you don't have to be in the same neighborhood with your loved ones in order to be a part of their lives.

I can't tell you how many people have approach me since I moved to Austin, TX, one year ago, from Atlanta, GA, and asked me -- why did I leave Atlanta to move here? So many people I met since arriving here, is obviously not happy -- so they need to figure out what they need to do.

I read an article the other day that said next to California, Austin, TX has one of the largest natural, holistic and organic communities around so I am where I need to be in my life right now. This is exactly what I was looking for.

A month ago when watching Super Soul Sunday on the Oprah Own Network, I found out one of the founders of Wholefood Stores is located in Austin -- so to me living here is ideal.

What part of the country do you want to live? This is a question that needs to be asked by everyone and they should in turn come up with a good answer.

As I age gracefully, I did not want to live in such a large city like Atlanta. I was seeking a more calmer environment so I could concentrate more on what I really wanted to do with my life.

Plus all my beautiful and close friends, my village, had passed on -- so why would I continue to stay in a city where I had no village or support system?

I have lost at least 40 of my friends in my life -- so don't forget to check up on the Seniors in your family because many will lose friends and become isolated as they age.

This city, Austin, TX, not only has a large natural, holistic and organic community but also a large metaphysical community -- so again -- I AM HOME -- and home is where the heart is!!!

I can't believe all the local meetup.com groups here -- so you will never get bored. After a year of checking out everything, I just launched 3 meetup.com groups myself - Austin's Empowered Women - 40 and Above; Austin's Holistic and Natural Community; and Austin's Writing Club -- in order to create my own villages and communities here.

It doesn't matter which part of the country you live in, there are good people everywhere so get out there and create connections and your own villages.

Not only are many of the local events here connected to a meetup.com group, but they even have meetup.com groups to organize the meetup.com groups here. Can you believe that?

And many of the meetup.com group organizers are offering services and products and making a living right out of their own homes. You can't do this in most cities especially large cities because of crime -- so again, Austin is an ideal spot for anyone seeking to grow themselves -- mentally, physically or spiritually.

So now you have no excuse not to get out there and build a community that you can truly love because after all -- if you build it, they will come.

My Move Up North: The East Coast Hustle

By Advice Columnist, Cathy Harris, DearCathy.com

August 10, 2015

We can't stay silent in matters of the heart.  I have meant to tell this story for a while now to educate everyone on why many people today can't be trusted and why you need to speak up for yourself and for others.

After being on the road for an entire year and visiting 15 states in 2013, and after living in Tampa, FL for 6 months, I decided to move up north to Philadelphia b efore eventually moving to Austin, TX in July 2014.
Since I was only going to be living in the Philly area for 6 months, I rented out a room by phone from a potential landlord, an African American woman, through a referral from another person.

Many people today have rooms to rent in their homes or on their properties for $400 to $450 a month.  This usually comes with utilities and many times cable and the internet.

But when I arrived in Philly in June 2014 in the wee hours of the night, I found out the room that I had rented did not even have an air conditioner or a ceiling fan.

Being from the south, 20 years in Atlanta, I did not know to ask beforehand about these things.  I just simply thought it was part of the accommodations.

So despite buying two box fans, the fans did nothing but blow out hot air.  Also the landlord did not bother to tell me that she had a beauty parlor on the premises in which I would have to be subjected to smelling toxic chemicals.

What I am wondering is how did these landlords up north get these properties to rent in the first place?  Are they just collecting money for other landlords (aka slumlords) or do they own these properties outright?

I spoke with three other potential landlords, African American women, who had rooms for rent in their homes but they had animals and did not even bother to clean their homes before inviting in a potential tenant.

What I saw in most of these landlords' eyes were the desperation to pay their bills.  They all had grown children in their 20s, especially male children, still living with them who should have had their own businesses and been out on their own.  However, I do understand the issues today.

Just Some of the Alarming U.S. Statistics Today:

*        20% of American families do not have one single family member employed at this time.
*        One out of every six men in their prime (25 to 54) do not have a job.
*        More than 20% of children are living in poverty.
*        Over a million public school children are homeless.
*        53% of wage earners makes less than $30,000 a year.
*        Half of all college graduates are still relying on their parents for financial support even after being out of school for 2 years.

Renting out a room in your home or basement is a great way to keep your head above water in this fallen economy.  However, no matter how hard things get, you still can't just treat people any kind of way.  Many of these potential landlords had extremely bad customer service skills and thought they could talk to you any kind of way.

Everyone continued to tell me that a ceiling fan would not be enough to keep my room cool, so I still looked at the options of moving somewhere else or buying an air conditioner.

First the landlord told me because of the old style windows I could not put an air conditioner in the windows.  Then I asked about the air conditioner that you can just sit in your room.

She had an answer for everything.  The landlord told me that I could not have a ceiling fan and air conditioner both in my room because it would be too much electric power in one room (in other words...her light bill would go up).

I can't believe these landlords in the north who think that they can rent these rooms out without sufficient air in the summer and heat in the winter.

This is inhumane treatment and agencies like the Department of HUD should be notified of these types of livings conditions.  These are nothing but code violations and these landlords need to be exposed.
People are not animals and they don't deserve to be put in inhumane conditions just so some landlord (aka slumlord) can live in some other neighborhood in their air conditioned house or condo and make money -- while many, especially senior citizens, lay in these rooms day and night in horrible living conditions.

In the summer months, many people in the north are staying inside trying to stay cool simply because they are very, very uncomfortable.  I see why people up north, especially senior citizens, do not live long compared to people in the south.  I also see why people move to the south.

If you are in a steady mode or position where everything in your life centers around keeping cool or keeping warm, then you can't really do much of anything else in your life.

In the end I decided to leave the entire state after three realtors did not respond back to me in a timely manner.  But right before I left, the landlord had placed ceiling fans in all the rooms -- so I was extremely happy about that for my other two female roommates, who had obviously chosen not to speak up about the issue.

Remember some people will come into your life not just for a season...but for a reason.

My message to all you landlords out there is -- you must have the decency to provide affordable housing with sufficient air and heat to your tenants, especially seniors, because it's the humane thing to do.
